Meet Anthony Drawn with his long awaited debut physical release 'A Beautiful Fragile Balance' (Sichtexot label). This LP also includes collaborations with Teknical Development (from Obba Supa) and Joshua Keyes, who talked with us about working on the material. But at first, here is our dialogue with Anthony.
Well, Anthony. I saw somewhere on internet... On your youtube page, I think. You wrote that ‘A Beautiful Fragile Balance’ will be released in November 2010 but it released only in 2012. Why is it so?
Anthony Drawn - A Beautiful Fragile Balance

Oh! You´re right. The first song ‘A Beautiful Fragile Balance’ was made in 2010. I wanted to release it late 2010 but then I made new songs and a few things changed and so it finaly came 2012...
So the whole period of working on the 'A Beautiful Fragile Balance' took almost 2 years?
Yes. ‘Something Stronger’ and ‘All That Surrounds You Will Fade’ are also from 2010.
How did you choose Teknical Dvelopment and Joshua Keyes as the collaborators for this LP?
I know Tek D and sent him the beat just to try if it works together (I didn´t except that this electronic sound works with rap..) Then a few weeks later Tek and Hey!zeus from Obba Supa visited us in Germany and we recorded the song. I´m really happy about the result! ’E.S.T.R.I.P. feat Joshua Keyes’ is a tribute song. I know Joshua and asked him to sing. The original is from a swedish jazz trio ‘Esbjorn Svensson Trio’.
I like this LP because it it is associated with some sci-fi things, with open space, with something breathtaking and free... What where your own visions and feelings when you worked on these tracks?
For me it is all ‘real’, there is no sci-fi. Atmosphere and emotions are very important to me when I make or also listen to music. I like your words ‘something breathtaking and free’.
I can add 'weightlessness'.
I don´t know there is also a deep or even sad/melancholic side, which does not really fit to ‘weightlessness’, I think. But thats always something, which decides the person who is listening.
You still do not have in plans to make a live presentation of the new material?
I don´t know. I don't see myself behind a macbook playing my own songs, neither turning a few controllers on a MPC and call it ‘live-music’. Maybe in the future, I am not sure...
About the artwork. Who did it?
I wanted something that fits to the music and also to the title ‘A Beautiful Fragile Balance’. I talked to a friend of mine, Christian Schupp who makes awesome illustrations and artworks. We had a few ideas and finally this came out. I love it!
I know you also took part in some compilations...
Yes:
FINEST EGO | German / Austrian / Swiss Compilation;
BEAT GARDEN Compilation by Gergaz Netlabel;
Dark Clover Records presents Origami Sound: Volume 2;
and some more.
Ok. What is up on your mind next? What do you work on now?
I´m working on a few remixes and new songs of course. But there is no next release in my mind yet.
Where people can order and buy this vinyl for now?
Right now you get the vinyl at www.sichtexot.com/shop, www.hhv.de & www.equinoxrecords.com/shop. I hope to find any international distribution soon...
Teknical Development
‘The collaboration of our sound come about sometime in 2011, shortly before Obba Supa was heading over to Mainz, Germany to do a show. Anthony hit me up with the instrumental that now is ‘Ghost in the shell’, explaining his works in progress and direction of his album. I wrote the song 2 days before we left out, and soon as we had a moment we were vibiin over at Tufu crib... We recorded a few songs that eve, but highlighted was the actual recording of the song ‘Ghost in the shell’. I think that this collaboration has extended further then I expected, meaning that the energy of the one song is still active. The LP in its complete form is the body complete, just brings to mind a giant cosmic SOMETHING! (if that makes any sense). Anthony has delivered a project with a lot of difference which in hand helps build a positive change in how beat-smith-instrumentalist are openly free with there sound...’.
Joshua Keyes
‘It was simple like that, Anthony called and he said: ‘Josh, I got this tune and I think your voice would sound great on it!’. You have to know, this was not the first work we did together. He is a pretty good musican and we both share this idea of ‘music is more’. If you see it that way, then you can find a whole own world on this LP. And so he got me and I am proud to be a part of his incredible creation...’.
