Orcas is a band by haze-pop auteur Benoît Pioulard and post-minimalist composer Rafael Anton Irisarri (also known as The Sight Below). A new video for the Orcas's song 'Arrow Drawn' came out not so long ago. 'Arrow Drawn' is a song from their debut LP, released in April 2012.
I got in touch with musicians and asked them to tell us a little about the video. Here are some interesting comments about the video from Rafael Anton Irisarri (also known as The Sight Below).
Why did you choose this song for making the video?
It's got one of the most traditional kind of song structures on the album, as well as the closest thing to a chorus or refrain in the 'pop' sense of those terms. After introducing ourselves with the cover of Broadcast's "Until Then" that we did last year, there was a consensus between us, the director and the folks at Morr Music that this one would make sense as a follow-up. We also feel it somewhat succinctly ties together a lot of the themes, ideas and sounds that exist across various other tracks on the album.
Who did the video?
It was directed and edited by a fellow from Austin, Texas called Sean Curtis Patrick who also created the lovely sleeve for the LP itself... Neither of us know much about the processes he used, but from what he told us it was pretty involved and required "days" worth of image rendering. Super talented, very friendly guy who is eager to share his skills.
Whose idea was it?
We knew we wanted to work with Sean on a video after he did such a great job on the sleeve and went on to create an amazing 'teaser' video for the LP (without even being asked!) — so once that was decided, we all discussed which song to do as mentioned above, and how best to make it come together.
Since they are living in Europe at the moment, Benoît's wife Nico did all the filming of him that you see in the video, which came from Utrecht and some rural parts of the UK.. The rest of it was either from Sean's 8mm and 16mm personal archives or shot specifically for the video, like the peacocks you see at certain points — there's a massive peacock preserve at the top of a giant hill in Austin that's really amazing. Benoît's been there.
